Who we are

Our Gray Area (“we,” “our,” or “us”) operates the Our Gray Area mobile application (the “App”), a platform designed to facilitate private, anonymous, one-on-one discussions between individuals of different political viewpoints. We are committed to protecting your privacy while enabling open, fearless dialogue.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and how we protect it. By using our App, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account Registration Information

When you create an account, we collect the following information:

  • First name (used internally for account management only — never displayed publicly)
  • Last name (used internally for account management only — never displayed publicly)
  • Password (encrypted)
  • Email address
  • Date of birth
  • Sex
  • Race
  • State (if in USA)
  • Country
  • Username (your public-facing identifier within the App)
  • Political persuasion (e.g., conservative, liberal, independent, socialist — not party affiliation)

Your real name is never displayed to other users. Only your username and the basic profile attributes listed above are visible to other participants.

2.2 Conversation Data

We store the content of conversations conducted through the App. While conversations are in progress, they are private and visible only to the two participating users. Once both users have exited a conversation and submitted their outcome ratings, the conversation transcript becomes publicly available and may be shared externally. When a transcript is created, it will only contain basic profile information – identifiable information such as email and real name will not be displayed.

2.3 Usage and Interaction Data

We may collect limited technical data to operate the App, including:

  • Device type and operating system
  • App version
  • Push notification interactions (e.g., “poke” notifications sent between users)
  • Abuse reports submitted by users

2.4 Information We Do Not Collect

We do not collect, display, or share:

Any information that would allow other users to identify, follow, or contact you outside the App

Your full legal name

Your location or IP address beyond what is technically required for App functionality

Your social media profiles or contact information

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect solely to operate and improve the App, including:

  • Creating and managing your account
  • Matching you with conversation partners
  • Delivering push notifications (including “poke” reminders)
  • Processing and publishing conversation transcripts after both users have exited and rated the conversation
  • Investigating and responding to abuse reports
  • Improving App performance and user experience

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.

4. Anonymity and Public Conversation Transcripts

Our Gray Area is designed with anonymity as a core principle. Other users can only see your username, sex, race, age, and political persuasion — never your real name or any other personally identifying information.

Please be aware of the following important details regarding conversation transcripts:

  • Conversations remain private during the active discussion period.
  • Once both participants have exited a conversation and each has submitted a conversation outcome rating, the full transcript of that conversation becomes publicly available within the App and may be shareable on other platforms.
  • Because transcripts are published after both parties exit and rate the conversation, you should not include personally identifying information within the body of your messages if you wish to remain anonymous.
  • We are not responsible for any personal information you voluntarily disclose within the conversation itself.

5. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not share your personal information with third parties except in the following limited circumstances:

  • Service Providers: We may share data with trusted third-party vendors who help us operate the App (e.g., cloud hosting, push notification services). These vendors are contractually obligated to protect your data and use it only for the services they provide to us.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or government authority, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Our Gray Area, our users, or the public.
  • Abuse Investigations: Information included in abuse reports may be reviewed by our team to assess potential violations and take appropriate action.
  • Published Transcripts: As described above, completed conversation transcripts become public after both users exit and rate the conversation.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account information for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal information from our active databases, though some data may remain in backups for a limited period thereafter.

Published conversation transcripts, once made public, may persist on the platform and may have been shared externally by other users. We cannot guarantee the removal of transcripts that have already been shared outside the App.

7. Children’s Privacy

Our Gray Area is not intended for users under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will take steps to delete it promptly. If you believe a child has registered, please contact us at the address below.

8. Data Security

We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights with respect to your personal information, including:

  • Access: The right to request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correction: The right to request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Deletion: The right to request deletion of your personal information, subject to certain exceptions (such as legally required retention or publicly published transcripts).
  • Withdrawal of Consent: The right to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the information in Section 11.

10. Content and Free Speech

Our Gray Area does not actively moderate conversation content. Users are responsible for the content of their own messages. Users may report abusive behavior, and we reserve the right to take action — including account suspension — in response to verified reports of abuse.

We believe in free expression and the value of open dialogue across different viewpoints. However, this does not limit our right to take action against users who violate our Terms of Service.

12. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last Updated” date at the top of this document. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of the App after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
