What exactly is Our Gray Area?
We believe that people are tired of arguing on social media platforms.
We also believe that people want to have sensible honest conversations about socio-political issues that are important to them.
That’s where we come in.
Our Gray Area is a platform where you give us the smallest amount of information, such as your age, sex, race, political persuasion or worldview, and we use this to match you in private 1:1 conversations with people whose views are different than yours. We believe that there’s little point in speaking with people who share your views, unless you just want to reinforce them, but speaking with those who differ is where understanding takes place.
“do I not destroy my enemies by making them my friends.” – Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor
When you open the Our Gray Area app, you will be able to create a conversation about a subject chosen from our extensive list of socio-political subjects, or join an existing conversation with that subject. Once the conversation begins you will each take turns in giving your point of view – you can only reply when it’s your turn (to make it fair and civil), and we hope this will encourage users to think about what they’re saying before they say it. So a conversation may take place in real-time, or over the course of hours or days, whenever it’s convenient for you.
Free speech is the rule we go by, and because either of the 2 conversation participants can end a conversation at any time, we expect that’s what people will do if the other user becomes abusive. We will not moderate or censor any conversations whatsoever.
Once a conversation is over, a transcript of it will become publicly available and can be shared with friends, or on other social media platforms – to spread the word that good sensible conversations can still happen!
Our hope is that by using our platform, people will rediscover the truth that when we stop yelling online and re-posting articles because the headline grabbed us, and really get into an honest discussion…. you will find that we have much more in common than you think.
That is the gray area we’re looking for – that is OUR Gray Area!
