Frequently asked questions

What is Our Gray Area?

Our Gray Area is a mobile app built for private, anonymous, one-on-one conversations between people of different political viewpoints. The goal is to create a space where you can engage in real dialogue — without fear of cancellation, harassment, or being doxxed.

You’ll never see another user’s real name, and they’ll never see yours.

How do I start or join a conversation?

After signing up, you can either start a new conversation by choosing a topic, or browse open topics and join an existing one. Once matched, you and the other user take turns making your case — you can’t send a new message until the other person has replied.

What information do other users see about me?

Other users only see your username, age, sex, race, and political persuasion (e.g., conservative, liberal, independent). Your real name is never visible to anyone on the platform.

What is the “poke” feature?

If you’re waiting on a reply and want to nudge the other person, you can send them a poke. This triggers a push notification reminding them it’s their turn. Use it sparingly — it’s a gentle reminder, not a pressure tactic.

What happens when a conversation ends?

Either user can exit a conversation at any time. Once both users have exited and each has selected an outcome (describing how they felt the conversation went), the full transcript becomes publicly available and can be shared on other platforms.

Until both users have exited and rated, the conversation remains private.

Will my transcript reveal who I am?

Published transcripts show only your username and profile attributes — not your real name. However, if you share personal details within your messages (your name, location, workplace, etc.), those will appear in the public transcript. We recommend keeping identifying information out of your messages if anonymity matters to you.

Does Our Gray Area moderate conversations?

We do not actively moderate conversation content. We believe in free speech and trust users to engage in good faith. That said, you can always exit a conversation that isn’t working for you.

If you experience genuine abuse, you can report the user and our team will review the report. Verified abuse may result in account suspension.

How do I report abusive behavior?

Within a conversation, you’ll find a report option in the menu. Submit your report and our team will review it. For urgent concerns, you can also email us directly at team@ourgrayarea.com.

How do I delete my account?

You can request account deletion by emailing us at team@ourgrayarea.com with the subject line “Delete My Account.” We’ll remove your personal information from our active systems. Note that any conversation transcripts already made public may remain visible.

I found a bug. How do I report it?

Please email team@ourgrayarea.com with a description of the issue, your device type, and the app version you’re running. Screenshots are always helpful. We appreciate the heads up — every bug report makes the app better.
